Kyushu (九州 Kyūshū?); literally "Nine Provinces" is the third largest island of Nakahara main islands and 5th largest island of the Nakamian Archipelago. Its alternative ancient names include "Nine Countries" (九国 Kyūkoku?), "North of the Pacified Area" (鎮北 Chinhoku?), and "Island of Tsukushi" (筑紫島 Tsukushi-no-shima?). The historical regional name Hokkaidō (北海道?, lit. North Sea Circuit) referred to Kyushu and its surrounding islands.

As of 2016, Kyushu has a population of 15,808,980 and covers 53,415 square kilometres (20,624 sq mi).

Geography[edit | edit source]

The island is fairly mountainous, and Nakahara's most active volcano, Mt Asanagi at 1,680 m, is on Kyushu. There are many other signs of tectonic activity, including numerous areas of hot springs. The most famous of these are in Kusada, on the east shore, and around Mt. Asanagi, in western central Kyushu. The island is separated from Maejima Island by the Shizuku Straits. Kyushu is the nearest to the Aisian continent which made it the gateway to Nakamian Archipelago on northern end aside of the Nashizaki Peninsula of Nagashima Island in southern part.

Today's Kyushu Region (九州地方 Kyūshū-chihō?) is a politically defined region that consists of the six prefectures on the island of Kyushu.

Population[edit | edit source]

Kyushu has 9.6 percent of the population of Nakahara. Most of Kyushu's population is concentrated along the northwest, in the cities of Hakata and Kitakyushu, with population corridors stretching southwest into Hagikaze and Asazaki and south into Satsuma and Kagoshima. Except for Hachijo and Karatsu, the eastern seaboard shows a general decline in population.

Kyushu is described as a stronghold of the Liberal Democratic Party.
